The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has officially adopted ISO/IEC 17020:2026 as the new Philippine National Standard (PNS), a strategic move designed to enhance the safety, reliability, and compliance of products, facilities, and services in the country.

Through the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS), the DTI has replaced the 2012 version of the standard, aligning the Philippine inspection protocols with the latest international benchmarks set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The 2026 edition introduces several critical updates aimed at modernizing inspection frameworks, most notably the transition to a simplified classification for the independence of inspection bodies. The previous three-tier system has been streamlined into Type A and Type non-A categories.

Additionally, the standard now features clearer definitions of key terms such as “item” and “client,” alongside new provisions for data control and risk management to reinforce organizational governance.

A significant shift in this revised version is the move away from highly prescriptive rules toward performance-based requirements. This transition grants inspection bodies greater flexibility in designing their internal systems, procedures, and documentation, while maintaining high-quality outcomes. By focusing on results rather than rigid processes, the DTI aims to foster a more adaptive and efficient inspection environment.

Inspection bodies play a key role in ensuring that products and services meet stringent technical regulations. While the adoption of this updated standard remains voluntary, the DTI emphasizes its importance as a primary reference for accreditation institutions and regulators. This alignment with international best practices ensures that Philippine inspection processes remain consistent and globally competitive.
