Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) gave beneficiaries from Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. (TWHI) and the QC Performing Arts Development Foundation, Inc. (QCPADFI) an enriching experience of learning, inclusion, and inspiration through the arts via a special screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical at The Theatre at Solaire last July.
For many of the beneficiaries, the outing, made possible through UnionBank’s long-standing partnership with GMG Productions, was more than a chance to watch a world-class stage production—it was an occasion to step outside their usual environment, experience the arts in a new and inspiring way, and discover possibilities that can broaden perspectives and spark aspirations.
For members of QCPADFI, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the artistic talents of young performers, the experience offered valuable lessons in creativity, confidence, and self-expression beyond entertainment. Watching an international-caliber production gave the children and aspiring artists a firsthand look at the technical and creative elements that bring a musical to life, from acting and stage direction to lighting and production design.
“I know that our organization, particularly the kids, can pick up lessons from this experience. They can deeply absorb the lessons, especially since they will have to go through life after this. This is a memorable experience for them,” said Hanzel Estrella, Program Director of the Vocal Ensemble of QCPADFI.
Estrella shared that while the organization occasionally receives invitations to local productions, this marked the first time many of its members were able to watch a globally renowned musical in a world-class venue.
The event held special significance for beneficiaries of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. (TWHI), a long-time UnionBank partner in creating opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs). In 2018, UnionBank established a satellite Command Center at TWHI’s Cainta, Rizal facility, providing IT and basic programming training that led to the hiring of PWD employees who continue to work remotely under the Bank’s supervision, alongside additional project-based engagements.
Building on this partnership, UnionBank’s invitation to experience Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical brought beneficiaries moments of recreation, inspiration, and inclusion beyond the workplace. “This gave us a chance to see and experience a different environment since we’re usually just in the compound. It’s a great way to take a break and relax from the stresses of our work and personal lives,” said Erika D. Villaflores, TWHI Public Relations and Fundraising Officer.
The initiative forms part of UnionBank’s flagship corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, GoBeyond Communities (GBC), which is anchored on the Bank’s purpose of reimagining banking to uplift lives, empowering individuals and communities through opportunities that create lasting impact. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on Education, Employment and Livelihood, Environment, and Inclusion, GBC seeks to enrich lives by providing programs and experiences that help people learn, grow, and thrive.
“One way to uplift the lives of our beneficiaries, particularly those from underserved communities, is to create meaningful opportunities and experiences. This is a good platform for them and a meaningful way for UnionBank to connect with the communities we serve,” said Carl De Luzuriaga, UnionBank Organizational Development Head.
As UnionBank continues to expand its GoBeyond Communities initiatives, it remains focused on unlocking opportunities that enable people to learn, thrive, and participate more fully in society. Beyond banking, the Bank seeks to create meaningful experiences that inspire confidence, broaden perspectives, and reinforce the belief that everyone deserves the chance to reach their full potential.
“At the heart of improving products and services is our care for the well-being of our communities. Meaningful experiences like these can open doors to inspiration, growth, and new possibilities,” De Luzuriaga said. “We hope to create moments that empower our beneficiaries, expand what they believe is possible, and remind them that they are valued, capable, and essential members of our community.”
Through initiatives like these, UnionBank continues to help unlock a future where access is broader, inclusion is intentional, and no one is left behind.
