The freelancers in California wins big last election as a ballot measure/proposition that favors them is likely to be passed.
California Proposition 22 is a ballot measure that classifies app-based drivers as independent contractors and not employees. As of the moment 58.5% of the Californians has voted yes to this ballot measure.
The corporate proponents of Proposition 22 such as Lyft, Uber DoorDash, Instacart, and Postmates has spent a whooping $200 million in political advertising, while union-backed opponents has spent $20 million. Proposition 22 will exempt transportation and delivery drivers from the requirements imposed by last year’s Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5), which mandates the employers to reclassify most freelancers as employees.
