HoYoverse, the maker of blockbuster mobile games Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, has launched the much-anticipated free-to-play action role-playing game (ARPG), Zenless Zone Zero on Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, and PlayStation 5, on July 4, 2024. Monochromes, the game’s paid currency, and the Inter-Knot Membership, a 30-day subscription offer, are now available for top up on Codashop in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Brazil, and the United States.

Zenless Zone Zero promises an immersive and dynamic gaming experience with its distinctive style and combat, and here are some pointers to help Proxies explore the dystopian New Eridu.

Knowing the basics: New Eridu, Hollows, Proxies, and Agents

Zenless Zone Zero is an urban fantasy ARPG with fast-paced, high-octane combat and, as with other HoYoverse titles, engaging characters that weave intricate storylines. The game is set in New Eridu, the last surviving haven in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by an abnormal phenomenon called the Hollows. Get to know some of the main elements of the game.

New Eridu

Despite being built in an ominous future, New Eridu boasts a bustling city life thanks to its colorful mix of denizens. The place is filled with stuff from the late 90s and early 2000s, including vintage music and video stores, a ramen shop, and a fully interactive arcade. These eras heavily inspire ZZZ, and it cleverly blends these artistic elements with futuristic concepts to pull the players’ heartstrings with nostalgia. Most of New Eridu’s technologies run on an unknown substance only found within the Hollows.

Hollows

The Hollows are dark, spherical, distorted dimensions that appear out of thin air. They swallow anything they touch and transport it to an internal space-time environment filled with dangerous creatures known as the Ethereals. The Hollows are also permeated by an unknown substance with great potential as a resource for New Eridu but also strangely toxic. Residents unlucky enough to get in contact with this substance develop mutations and slowly lose their consciousness.

Proxies and Agents

In Zenless Zone Zero, you play as Proxies Belle or Wise, co-owners of Random Play, a vintage video store and the center of the underground Proxy Network. Proxies are tech experts who help Agents (playable characters) navigate the Hollows and extract resources.

As Proxies, your goal is to create 3-member teams of Agents and guide them in clearing emerging Hollows to complete various missions. You can also use them to interact with the world of Zenless Zone Zero.

Experience the 90s and 2000s through a new lens

Zenless Zone Zero’s bold and vibrant art style uniquely sees its Agents flaunting bling, gizmos, and urban tech ware. At the same time, the game’s brilliant UI shows a polished combo of acid graphic designs and futuristic rhythm game displays from the 2000s. The music serves as the secret sauce that wraps the entire ZZZ feel, serving tasty tracks in the Big Beat genre, a rhythm-heavy blend of hip-hop, jazz, funk, and rock.

New Eridu’s factions

With the industrialization of the Hollows came increased tensions between New Eridu’s enterprises, gangs, and organizations. Clashes between these factions help bring the game’s story to life and highlight its captivating roster of Agents, which are the playable characters used to interact within the world of Zenless Zone Zero:

  • Belobog Heavy Industries is a company that specializes in In-Hollow construction using the latest tech. They’re led by Koleda Belobog, a fierce young leader who, despite her child-like appearance, is a mature president who believes in leading by example.
  • Gentle House, a.k.a. The Cunning Hares is a small human resource agency that mainly deals with commissions related to the Hollows. It got its nickname due to its founder, Nicole Demara’s cunning and crafty ways, which helped cement its reputation in the metro.
  • Hollow Special Operations Section 6 is designated as an armed force that responds to Hollows. Equipped with cutting-edge equipment and superb intel, Section 6 takes on the most dangerous tasks to keep the peace in New Eridu. Soukaku the Glutton and Hoshimi Miyabi are known assets of H.S.O.S.6.
  • Victoria Housekeeping Co. is another human resource agency offering, you guessed it, housekeeping services. But its loyal customers know it also cleans up a different type of mess, including dire ones that always happen in the Hollows.

The ZZZ combat experience

Now that we’ve seen New Eridu and its inhabitants let’s rev it up and see them in action! Zenless Zone Zero brings in a high-speed combat system where Proxies deploy 3-member teams and switch between characters to unleash various attacks. It’s easy to pick up and enjoy, and you can get away with mashing buttons in the earlier stages. Still, it has some depth to it, and digging deep into the mechanics will be crucial once you start squaring up with the tougher Ethereals on the later levels.

Working on your timing and learning enemies’ attack patterns feel highly satisfying in ZZZ, as it integrates cinematic cuts that unlock special counterattacks when played perfectly. Each Agent also has unique mechanics that allow for player expression. One could easily have hours of fun just by optimizing team combos.
